Rules and Regulations

On Horn Pond, there are several official laws laid out by both the state of Maine and state of New Hampshire that boaters must follow. Additionally, there are a few common courtesy requests that we ask you to adhere to when boating on the lake.

  • When within 150 feet (NH), or 200 feet (ME), of shoreline, rafts, other boats, or swimmers, your boat’s maximum speed cannot exceed 6 mph. Additionally, be careful to not churn up the bottom of the lake in shallow waters, as this can lead to increased algae growth.

  • All boats can make a large wake, regardless of type or size. Large wakes can cause erosion, damage wildlife habitat (such as loon nests), damage shoreline, damage docks and tied up boats, and put swimmers in danger.

Typically, a boat’s wake is largest when the boat is traveling at medium speeds before it has planed out. When making a large wake for water sports, boaters are asked to be as close to the middle of the lake as possible.

To learn more about wakes and their potential dangers, visit WSIA Boating Safety or BoatUS Wake Boat Etiquette.

  • Swimmers, canoes, kayaks, and sailboats get the right of way over motorboats. While boating, please be watchful for those sharing the water with you.

  • Operating a motorboat while under the influence of drugs or alcohol is illegal. Federal law prohibits anyone from operating a watercraft with a BAC of above 0.08%.

Other reckless operation, such as weaving through heavy boat traffic, excessive circling, or cutting across the bow or wake of another boat is also prohibited.

  • While operating in the dark (from sundown to run rise), all boats are required to have navigational lights.

  • Loons may pop up anywhere on the lake from underwater. Be sure to stay on the look out for loons, especially if they have chicks in tow. Stay a respectful distance from loons, and all other wildlife.

Additionally, be mindful of how your wake and the noise of your boat might affect wildlife habitats.

  • Please refrain from throwing trash overboard, as it damages and pollutes the lake, making it less safe for wildlife and residential use alike.
